If we look at the data from web information company Alexa, Squidoo and HubPages began online since 01/06/2005 and 27/4/2005 respectively. Both sites have a very high traffic ranking that shows their popularity in the world.
Squidoo VS HubPages, which one is better? What’s in your mind now when you see Squidoo has a higher traffic ranking? Squidoo is better? Not really. Let’s us look at the difference between Squidoo and HubPages and you will find that both of them have their own advantages.
1. User interface
At Squidoo, you are a lensmaster (author) and you create your lenses (webpage) with Modules.
At HubPages, you are a Hubber (author) and you create your hubs (webpage) with Capsules.
At Squidoo, you can use HTML, poll module, and image link where you can’t do it in HubPages.
At HubPages, your hub’s number of tag is unlimited whereas Squidoo only allows 40 tags for your lens.
HubPages capsule publishing interface is easier to use, you just “Drag and Drop” or click on the easy to understand instruction icons for capsule resize and reposition. When comes to Squidoo’s interface, you need some time to get familiar with it as it doesn’t give you a direct and easy-to-use first impression.
2. Adult content
Squidoo allows adult content but HubPages doesn’t. In order to view the adult content, your lenses setting in Squidoo must be set to “X rated”.
3. Make money
At HubPages, you use your own account for Google Adsense, Kontera, Amazon, and EBay. So, all the page impression and purchase made under your hubs are all yours.
At Squidoo, you use their Google Adsense account and you share their revenue (Adsense and sponsorship ads) based on your lens traffic and ranking. Also, you share half of your earning with Squidoo in your lens for earnings generated from Amazon, EBay, and CafePress.
Apart from that, HubPages has a very rewarding Ongoing Royalties Program that pays you 10% earning of your referred hubber’s hub impression. Squidoo has a referral program that pays you $5 one-off when your referred lensmaster earns his first $15. The referred lensmaster also will be rewarded $5 if that happened.
On top of that, you can promote your affiliate products or services in both lens and hubs. You are entitled to keep 100% affiliate commission for your own. However, don’t overly promote your affiliate links in hubs. Why? Read more below!
4. Link
You have more freedom with using links in your lens in Squidoo. Squidoo allows you to share any links you want in your lens. If you are doing internet marketing that promote heavily on affiliate links, Squidoo is best for you. This is where the HubPages biggest disadvantage kicks in if we compared links application with Squidoo. Let’s check out the HubPages “Link Rules”,
* You must have no more than 1-2 links to any one domain on a page of original content (tinyurl and other cloakers are considered wildcards)
* You may NOT add links to sites or offers you are promoting on copied, non-original Web content (i.e. if the copy exists already on the Web, you can’t reuse it to promote your sites)
* You can not give a short teaser and a link to “read more” or “continue”. The Hub must have the full content you want to present.
* You can NOT add links to sites irrelevant to the Hub’s topic
* You should consider adding more original content, or legitimate links to other online resources that complement this Hub’s topic
5. Earning Transparency
HubPages earning report is more transparent as you can install your own Google Analytic to keep track on your traffic and keywords on your hubs. Besides, you can have immediate live report for the hub’s impressions, click thru and earnings for your Google Adsense, Amazon, EBay, and Kontera accounts. The downside for Squidoo is, you can only find out how much you have earned in 2 calendar months.
6. Content Ranking/Scoring
At HubPages, you have HubScore point from 1 to 100 that is updated every 10 minutes. The more originality of your hubs, good rating by other users and length of submission on your hubs, the higher your HubScore point.
At Squidoo, you have LensRank rating from 1 to #499,000 that is updated every day. The best rating for the top lens is 1, whereas a LensRank of #4,500 is lower (but still considered good), and #429,000 is much much lower. However, LensRank is all relative. Your lens may be #9773 in overall, but it may still be the top ranked lens in your category, Factors that decide the LensRank depends on the lens update frequency, traffic, inbound, outbound links and more.
7. Content Indexing by Search Engine
Some people may find that hubs is indexed by Google very fast compare to lens because Google Spiders craw HubPages more frequent. There may be several reasons behind this, HubPages disallowed adult content and spam hubs (Google dislike adult content and spam too). Moreover, HubPages emphasis in content originality and disallow content that is too personal which less likely to be useful for readers and is not favorable by search engines.
So, Squidoo VS HubPages, which one is better?
Do both! That’s my suggestion. Join Squidoo and HubPages now. You have nothing to loose. Why? Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket. You can earn money with both Squidoo and HubPages. But, don’t risk all your earnings with either one of them. Anything can happen if we violate their terms of use, and maybe all our earnings will be forfeited. At last, don’t republish the same content from HubPages to Squidoo and vice versa, emphasis more in originality of your content to avoid terms of use violation in both Squidoo and HubPages.

One deciding factor for me is customer service. Squidoo seems to be better at this than HubPages. Not that HubPages is really bad mind you, but I had so much trouble with one hub that I finally just took it down.
